A family dentist addresses oral health issues for the whole family, from adults to babies. Dr. Ernest Skaggs of Radcliff, KY, provides many services, like regular dental checkups and professional dental cleanings.

Here are a few services a family dentist provides:

  • Dental Implants: These are tooth-like oral appliances that replace missing tooth roots. Missing tooth roots is a result of severe tooth decay that leads to gum disease and tooth loss or because of some sort of accident, which results in your tooth being knocked out. This procedure can last a lifetime and only takes proper oral hygiene to maintain the health of your teeth.
  • Crowns: These oral appliances are caps placed over broken, chipped, fractured, or stained teeth. They reinforce already existing teeth and hide aesthetically unpleasant teeth. The porcelain caps also restore bite and chewing function and even improve speech.
  • TMJ Treatment: Teeth grinding is a serious jaw problem that may affect teeth, gums and bone structure. Temporomandibular joint disorder, which causes a clicking or popping sound when opening and closing the mouth, is a disorder your dentist treats.

What are the advantages of having a family dentist?

  • It creates good habits because it builds a positive relationship between the dentist, their office and your family.
  • It consolidates appointments for people of all ages to visit a single office, instead of going to multiple specialists.
  • It keeps records in one place and knowing the family history makes treatment, especially during emergencies, easier.
  • It is considered preventative care because Dr. Skaggs provides regular dental exams and professional dental cleanings to protect teeth from serious tooth decay that may lead to tooth loss and gum disease.

A first tooth is not only a milestone for your baby, but it is also a sign that their journey to oral health has begun. After all, as soon as those little pearly whites appear, its time to make an appointment with your Radcliff family dentist, Dr. Ernest Skaggs, to ensure that your little one's smile stays strong and clean.

Why are pediatric dental checkups necessary?

Even though your child's baby teeth will begin falling out when they enter grade school, it is still important to keep your child's gums healthy and ready for when their permanent teeth come in. This is because baby teeth, just like adult teeth, can develop decay if not properly cared for, potentially leading to gum disease, inflammation, cavities, oral pain, and difficulty eating.

Your Radcliff family dentist will want to see your child as soon as their teeth come in to start them on the path to a lifelong healthy smile. Early checkups can help your family dentist uncover and treat cavities/decay before they cause further damage, as well as help your child develop good oral hygiene habits. By taking your child to a Radcliff family dentist regularly, you are teaching them the importance of oral health and helping them become comfortable with their dental care provider.

What will my Radcliff family dentist recommend?

During checkups with your family dentist, you will learn the proper way to brush your child's teeth, as well as how to help them practice dental hygiene at home every day. This routine requires that you:

  • Begin brushing your child's teeth as soon as they come in, using just a tiny amount of fluoridated toothpaste on a soft bristle brush. Starting around age two, assist your child with brushing their teeth with a pea-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste. Supervise your child's brushing habits until they have established the correct technique.
  • Have your child drink fluoridated water to protect their teeth.
  • Avoid giving your child sugary drinks or juices. Don't give your child a bottle to drink from overnight.
  • Floss your child's teeth for them until they are able to properly do so themselves.

Baby teeth - everyone can agree that they are precious and adorable. And while there is no question that teaching children the children's dentistimportance of good oral hygiene as early as possible is important, from an adult perspective, how important are baby teeth really, considering they're going to fall out anyway?

It's a valid (and common) question. Unfortunately, baby teeth are still susceptible to the long term damage that bacteria and tooth decay can inflict on the gums and underlying bone. What happens to a child's baby teeth can also affect the strength and health of their adult teeth once they erupt.

Pediatric Dental Care in Radcliff, KY

Dr. Ernest Skaggs, a Radcliff, KY based family dentist, offers pediatric services to help address the unique dental needs of the littlest patients. Dr. Skaggs offers parents a few simple guidelines that anyone can incorporate to help their children learn about and appreciate good oral hygiene habits early - even before the baby teeth make an appearance!

  • First things first - schedule a check up and dental exam for your child to get the ball rolling.
  • How soon is too soon to start brushing and flossing? The key is to spark an interest in brushing and make it fun and engaging for children. Using an infant brush to gently brush the gums as the teeth are starting to erupt is a great way to get a head start. Once the teeth begin to come in, the same standards as permanent teeth apply - brush twice daily, and introduce floss when the teeth begin to touch.
  • Control the sugar intake (this one is a no brainer). Sugar can lead to cavities and decay, even in baby teeth, and set children up for dental problems that will extend to their permanent teeth as well. Dr. Skaggs advises parents to switch out sugary juices for water to help control the amount of sugar that accumulates on the teeth throughout the day.
  • (Don't) chew on this. Staples of childhood like pacifiers are useful and perfectly fine, within reason. The recommended age to ween a child off a pacifier in order to avoid problems with spacing and alignment as the baby teeth begin to erupt is around age two.
